Earlier, we reported that actor Alec Baldwin had been cast in Todd Phillips’ Joker film as Thomas Wayne. It has now been announced that the actor has dropped out of the project.
Baldwin told USA Today, “I’m no longer doing that movie.”
He then went on to throw some shade at the role by saying, “I’m sure there are 25 guys who can play that part” before citing “scheduling” issues as another reason he could no longer commit.
A possible reason for Baldwin to withdraw is the reported reimagining of Thomas Wayne as a “cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mould of a 1980s Donald Trump” rather than the compassionate philanthropist he is in the comics. Baldwin regularly portrays Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, and may have seen this role as a kind of typecasting.
Production on Joker begins this fall.
