Following Tom Cruise’s first tease of Top Gun: Maverick, it has been announced that Val Kilmer will reprise his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

Unsurprisingly, given the title, Tom Cruise’s Maverick will be a bigger focus in the sequel, and when fans of the original are reintroduced to the character, they will see a very different version of Maverick, who has now transitioned to being a mentor to the newest generation of hot shots.

Even before the sequel was officially announced, Val Kilmer has been more than ready to return to his role, having stated to fans that if he were offered the role again he would take it without having to see a script.

The Wrap was first to break the news that Kilmer was to appear in Top Gun: Maverick, but at the moment it is still unclear what role Iceman will play in the sequel. The report also suggests that Kilmer is already at work on the sequel, as the actor has been spotted near the film’s San Diego set.

One of the most memorable aspects of the original film was the somewhat homoerotic bromance between Maverick and Goose (Anthony Edwards), which will obviously be missing from the sequel, however it will be interesting to see whether Maverick and Iceman have remained rivals all these years, or whether a friendship has grown between the two, which will act as the centre of this story.

With the addition of a Kilmer as Cruise’s co-star, we finally have another face to put to the project, and with character breakdowns teasing that the sequel will see the arrival of Goose’s son, and a new love interest for Maverick, there’s still plenty of roles that are still left to be revealed.

Top Gun: Maverick is slated for release on July 12th, 2019.
