It’s a strange couple of days for Sony’s Venom – after Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed joined the cast, Sony has added another indie name to the list – Landline’s Jenny Slate.
Sources have claimed that Slate will be playing a scientist in the film, which will star Tom Hardy as the lead.
Slightly overshadowing this news, however, is the announcement of Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey) joining the writing team. Yes, the writer of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie will be joining Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinker (The Dark Tower) to pen the script for Venom. Admittedly, we can’t judge her writing by this, as she didn’t have the best material to work with, but it does seem like an odd decision on Sony’s part.
Ruben Fleischer is set to direct the film, on which production is rumoured to start in October of this year. This film will be part of the same shared (Spider-Man-adjacent) Marvel Comics universe as Sony’s upcoming movie Silver and Black, which will see Silver Sable and Black Cat unite for the first time in a live-action movie. Venom has already been described as a gritty, horror-inspired take on the anti-hero.
Venom is scheduled to hit the big screen on October 5th, 2018.
