Today saw the release of a teaser trailer for new Vince Vaughn film, Brawl in Cell Block 99 from Bone Tomahawk’s S. Craig Zahler. And it seems that not content with just a foray into serious acting with the second (slightly less favoured) season of True Detective, Vaughn has once again cast off the shackles of all-out comedy for action thrills.
While this isn’t exactly new territory for Vaughn – remember, he played Norman Bates in 1998’s remake of Psycho – the problem is that he has made something of an intense turn into drama after so many years of comedies – both good and bad. This, of course, does not mean he is incapable of serious acting, however, when an audience is so used to seeing an actor in a certain kind of role, it’s very difficult for us to see them differently – so naturally, we associate Vince Vaughn with comedy, leading his dramatic roles often seeming devoid of the personality we have been so familiar with.
Regardless, Brawl In Cell Block 99 is a stylish action/thriller, as even a simple sound of Vaughn’s fist hitting a car window, becomes the rhythmic backing for the rest of the teaser, like a heartbeat at the centre of the trailer, beating fasting as the pace increases.
Brawl In Cell Block 99 is due for release on October 6th.
