AMC has announced that this Sunday’s Talking Dead will see the reveal of the crossover character between the worlds of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.

The crossover was first teased by creator Robert Kirkman in October, during New York Comic Con, however the identity of this character has remained under-wraps. However, this hasn’t stopped fans, who have been speculating about the mystery character’s identity since the announcement was made.

The most popular of these theories is that the character is Michael Cudlitz’s Abraham, who was killed by Negan in the Season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead – this would see the character appearing in Fear the Walking Dead, at an earlier point in the timeline. Another theory has a Fear character, possibly Alicia and Madison, making the move to the main show.

Speculation about a Fear character showing up on The Walking Dead was fuelled at the end of last week’s episode, when Rick spotted a helicopter flying overhead – which is definitely strange in a post-apocalyptic world where most technology has been rendered obsolete.

AMC has now announced via Twitter, that they will end the speculation and reveal which character will cross over during Sunday’s Talking Dead, the show which airs directly after The Walking Dead.

Prior to the crossover announcement, Walking Dead producers had always insisted that it wouldn’t make any sense to directly connect the two shows, owing to their differing timeline, so it begs the question – what made them change their mind?

For this crossover to work (as more than a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it novelty) the character who will straddle the two shows needs to be someone who fans will be eager to see again – which is what makes the Abraham theory so popular.

The biggest question, however, is whether this gimmick will inject new life into the Walking Dead, who’s ratings have been declining since Season 7, and have dropped this season to levels not seen since the second season. Moving a Fear character to the main series likely won’t improve ratings unless there’s a big plot point coming with them, and if it’s a Walking Dead character moving to Fear, there won’t be a payoff until mid-2018, when the series returns.

Either way, the suspense will end on this Sunday’s Talking Dead.
