Plus Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot tease more about the sequel at CCXP
Warner Bros. has finally released a trailer for the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, and with director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot appearing at CCXP in Sao Paulo, fans were treated to a few more teases of the film.
The trailer understandably has a very heavy ‘80s vibe to it, as we’re taken through mall-era fashion with glimpses of Pedro Pascal’s villainous (and slightly Trump-esque) Max Lord. There’s plenty of girl talk between Diana (Gadot) and Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) as the two discuss love, all leading up to the mysterious return of Diana’s former flame Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) – but there’s also a hell of a lot of lightning lassoing, gravity-defying flips, and Amazonian punching to sink you teeth into. As well as a look at Diana in her full Golden Eagle armour, wings and all.
Jenkins said of the sequel, “The first movie was so great to make the beginning of Wonder Woman — but now we have Wonder Woman to get unleashed in the modern world to take on her greatest foes and save for her epic battle to save people.”
After entering CCXP with an army of Wonder Woman cosplayers, Gal Gadot spoke a little about where Diana is in this film. “In this movie we find her in 1984 and is quite lonely — she’s lost her friends and doing what she needs to do. She’s helping mankind and saving them until something crazy happens to her.”
Could that something crazy be Steve’s return to the land of the living? Well, Jenkins is still remaining tight-lipped on exactly how he returns, but did promise fans that it isn’t a gimmick, and is integral to the story.
Jenkins was also clear on what kind of effects fans can expect from the film including wire work, stunts and (thankfully) minimal CGI. And while we don’t see Barbara as Cheetah in the trailer, apparently they tried to use mostly makeup to recreate the DC villainess, so as to make the character look as realistic as possible.
Also released at CCXP were posters, one for each of the four main characters – Wonder Woman, Steve Trevor, Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, and Max Lord:
